Operating an EV in the SF Bay Area

Continuing the discussion from Operating an Ioniq 5 EV:

Similarly, I’ve never operated a new vehicle in the Bay Area, and there are several steps I should take to make it optimal for my purposes. I’ll track and share in this topic.

Using a vehicle in the Bay Area means using FasTrak, which operates as the tolling authority for bridges and HOV lanes.

I had planned to go in a particular order:

  1. Register for customized license plates, then
  2. Register as Clean Air Vehicle
  3. Request CAV FasTrak responder

None of that worked, because:

  1. The new vehicle is registered at the dealership, and I will just receive plates in the mail
  2. While it is nice to have a CAV, benefits for CAVs are ending soon, due to budgeting or something
  3. The fancy CAV FasTrak responder won’t be fancy any longer

Therefore I am just going to order a standard FasTrak responder. :+1:

A lot of research to find out I was not doing anything!

Over the weekend I installed both the new plates and FasTrak responder.

Next I’ll be looking into what that exactly means for the roads I use.
